Heh, I've given plenty of pointers that free spirits might take up (and yes, bagpipes would be a giggle) but absolutely no need to re-kit for this game, Monty was very considerate in that way...

Hmmm...

I was looking forward to giving the line inf kit an outing, however it all seems liek it may be academic as i have a party on the sat night making anything on the sunday incredibly unlikely.

Oh well.

Ah, that's a pity Gadge. I stopped going to parties when I was eight.

"The weather on the hillside where they were dug in had been so cold that, despite the fact that everyone in the 'Red Devons' had been wearing 'string vest, woolen vest, Army shirt, woolen pullover, battledress, flying smock, a greatcoat and a snowsuit', a soldier in B Company had actually frozen to death. He wouldn't be the only one to do so before the battle was over."
[Red Devons was the nickname of the Devonshire Regiment, part of 6th Airborne's glider battalion]

Re berets - there must be a load of info somewhere on this forum about Ox & Bucks berets as we all wore them for Varsity (except I believe we all had the wrong size badge)

Couple of nice pics:

This is what I was looking for by written by fallingplate, beret most info relevant of course:

I've not posted on this site before, happy to be just a lurker! I am primarily a WWII Reenactor (no doubt I will be dubbed a 'Stitch Nazi' here!), the 2nd (Airborne) Battalion Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry is my MAIN impression. This is because I am an Ex Royal Green Jacket and now a serving WO in the Rifles, 2 Oxf & Bucks LI is one of the RGJ founding Regiments and VERY close to my heart.

I felt you may be interested in the correct dress for an officer of 2 Oxf & Bucks LI (please note the correct abbreviation for this Regt, Oxf, not Ox or Oxs).

So for your edification, here goes!

Cap badges are difficult to come by, there are three main types that are found on sale:
PICTURE 1

No1 is the correct war time one, No2 is a circa 1950's one and No3 is a Pre Airborne cap badge, the type that would have been worn on the FS cap or even by the 1st Bn.

The cap badge backing is 2" in diameter and of RIFLE GREEN (not bottle green), the best this to use for this is a Rifles beret cut to shape.
PICTURE 2

Officers rank is the standard Scarlet Infantry type as mentioned earlier by Gadge. This is for the BD's, Shirts, epilate slides and Denison.

The facing of each lapel must have a brown Gorget Cord surmounted by a small Oxf & Bucks LI button. My camera does not take very good close ups, but the button is brass, has the Oxf & Bucks LI cap badge in the centre surrounded by a wreath, underneath are the words 'Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire' (these buttons are like rocking horse poo to find!!!).

Between each breast pocket there must be a 'Whistle Strap' held on by a large brass button similarly adorned the button described above. The Whistle Strap runs into each pocket, on one end is attached a fob watch, on the other a whistle.
PICTURE 3

Truly, by 1944 the Shoulder Titles should be the standard infantry white on scarlet 'Oxf & Bucks', however there are RARE occasions of the old privately purchased 'FIFTY SECOND' shoulder title being worn in Normandy. Major John Howard (OC D Coy & the Coup De Main party). This however is the MAJOR exception (excuse the pun).

The Glider Qualification Badge is located in the normal position on the right lower sleeve, but this should be backed with RIFLE GREEN backing of the same material as the cap badge backing.
PICTURE 4

2 Oxf & Bucks LI wore NO lanyards and NO epilate loops (don't believe the sh1te on the SoF website or some of the Bouchery books its tosh!).

These are the main points for portraying an Officer from my Regiment.

I run the 2nd (Ab) Bn Oxf & Bucks LI Living History Group. Two of the group members is are Geoff & Dave Baulk, they have a permanent display dedicated to the Coup De Main party in Bletchley Park. It is a fine display with a wealth of information and worth a visit if you are intending to portray us. On many of the weekends that BP is open you will find Tich Raynor by the display. Tich is a good friend and an Ex Sjt of 2 Oxf & Bucks LI, he was on the Coup De Main party and will gladly tell you how he was shot by a dead German!

By the way the Coup De Main was not called Op Pegasus, but loosely known as Op Deadstick (really just the glider op). 2 Oxf & Bucks LI were originally part of 1st Airlanding Bde, 1st Ab Div. When 6th Ab Div was formed they were transferred over to that Div to 6th Airlanding Bde. They did not take part in Op Market Garden as that Op was carried out by 1st AB. However, 1st Ab Div defence Platoon was a Pl left in 1st Ab Div as a signature Pl. Although commanded by a 2 Oxf & Bucks LI Officer, by the time of Market Garden the Pl was a 'mish mash' of cap badges. It is HIGHLY unlikely that someone from 2 Oxf & Bucks LI served in Normandy and then Arnhem!

Hope this information helps and is taken in the way it is meant.

Cheers,

Andy Ansell

Yeah but isn't that all info for the airborne battalion?

The one we need is the line infantry battalion and will be significantly different?

Need? You have a choice: 1st Battalion = Infantry (part of 53rd Welsh Infantry Division), 2nd Battalion = Airborne (part of the 6th Airborne Division)

Therefore, no need for new kit or re-badging as already togged up for 2nd batt.

Well I'm still non-the-wiser as regards the preferred kit for this one then...

Two separate issues - what players want to wear and what PBI want to wear.

The reason why I am posting all this on the Private PBI forum is that you want a coordinated look. As I have already pointed out, game-wise there are many options people might choose.

If you want to make PBI rebadge as a Scottish or Welsh regiment or Ox and Bucks 1st Batt, that's fine, but I would have thought the most sensible choice would be kit exactly as per Varsity, players from that won't have to change or add to kit and new players need only add a cap badge to their maroon beret, job done. Perfectly correct for the battle and easy-peasy.

Anyhoo, over to you, I'm moving on to the Yanks and Jerries now to get that under way.
